How To Update Bitaxe

When it comes to your Bitaxe, you’ll want to make sure you keep it up-to-date. Firmware updates bring new features, improvements, and bug fixes that can enhance your experience.

The good news is that there are multiple ways to update your Bitaxe, depending on your needs and situation. Let’s walk through the main methods, from simple updates to more advanced solutions if things go wrong.

How To Update Your Bitaxe Firmware (Quick Step-By-Step Video)

If you’d rather not read, there’s a step-by-step video below that shows everything in under three minutes.

Easy Firmware Update via the Settings Menu

The easiest and most common way to update your Bitaxe is through its main settings menu in AxeOs. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Access Settings: Start by going to the main screen of your Bitaxe and navigate to the Settings section.
  2. Check for Updates: Scroll down, and you’ll find a section showing your current firmware version and the latest release. If an update is available, it’ll let you know.
  3. Download the Update Files: The update comes in two files:
ESP Minor.bin: This is the main firmware update.
WWW.bin: This is the updated website UI file.
You’ll download these files to your computer, typically to your Downloads folder. If your browser flags them as unsafe, just go ahead and tell it to keep the files. You can download them directly from AxeOS by just clicking on the link, but also you can go find them here all the releases: https://github.com/skot/ESP-Miner/releases/
  4. Update Firmware: Go back to your Bitaxe, and click Browse to select the ESP Minor.bin file from your Downloads folder. This will begin the firmware update process. The update can take a bit of time, so be patient.
  5. Update the Website UI: Once the firmware update is complete, you can move on to updating the website. Select the WWW.bin file and open it the same way as the firmware update. This step usually takes a bit longer than the firmware update, so give it some time.Finish and
  6. Restart: After the website update is complete, your Bitaxe may restart. Once it’s back online, you should see the new firmware version displayed (e.g., 2.4.1).

And that’s it! You’re all set with the latest firmware and website UI for your Bitaxe.

Downgrading to an Older Firmware Version (Extra 1)

Sometimes, a new firmware update might cause unexpected issues. In that case, you might want to downgrade to a previous version. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Visit the GitHub Page: Go to the ESP Minor GitHub repository: https://github.com/skot/ESP-Miner/releases/. Under the “Releases” section, you’ll see a list of all available firmware versions.
  2. Select a Previous Version: If you want to downgrade to a version like 2.3.0, just find it in the list and click on it.
  3. Download the Files: You’ll find the same two files as before: the ESP Minor.bin (firmware) and WWW.bin (website UI). Download them to your computer.
  4. Repeat the Update Process: Now that you’ve got the older firmware files, just follow the same process as the regular update—go to your Bitaxe settings and upload the older firmware and website UI files.

Now you’ve successfully downgraded your Bitaxe firmware!

Recovering from a Bad Update (Using Web Flasher) (Extra 2)

Sometimes, things don’t go as planned, and a bad firmware update might leave your Bitaxe inoperable (aka “bricked”).

Don’t panic—there’s a way to restore it using the Bitaxe Web Flasher. Here’s how:

  1. Prepare Your Bitaxe: Plug your Bitaxe into both power and your computer via USB.
  2. Launch the Web Flasher: Open the Bitaxe Web Flasher tool. You’ll see an option to connect to your device.
  3. Connect to Your Bitaxe: Hit Connect in the Web Flasher, and it should automatically detect your Bitaxe.
  4. Select Your Device & Firmware Version: Once connected, choose the correct model of your Bitaxe (e.g., Gamma), the board version (usually printed on the board itself), and the firmware version you want to flash.
  5. Start Flashing: Hit Start Flashing, and the tool will restore your Bitaxe with the selected firmware.

This method is a lifesaver if something goes wrong during an update.

Updating your Bitaxe firmware is an easy and essential way to make sure your device is running smoothly. You can update it through the settings menu for a quick and easy solution, or if needed, you can downgrade or restore it using advanced methods like the Web Flasher tool.
